Fox Want Joe Carnahan For Gritty 'Daredevil,' May Give Marvel Silver Surfer & Galactus For Rights Extension | The Playlist

Update: According to Deadline, the real discussion between Disney/Marvel and Fox is not over lending characters, but instead a possible co-financing deal. Guess we'll see how this plays out.
Has someone over at Fox been reading The Playlist? It was only a few weeks ago, shortly after David Slade exited "Daredevil," that we unveiled our list of possible replacements, and one of them was none other than Joe Carnahan. "He's got style, blockbuster experience and a good feel for street life, which seems to be a good mix for a project like this," we wrote, and it seems the suits over at the studio agree.

Variety reports that Fox are in discussions with the helmer to take on the gig, but there is one small problem -- their rights to the character essentially run out October 10th, and as it stands, they would need to start production before then to hang on to them. But as that's unlikely to happen, as they are negotiating with Marvel, who wants access to the characters Silver Surfer and Galactus, which are currently owned by Fox, in exchange for a deadline extension. Seems reasonable enough, except they are both part of the Fantasic Four world Fox is trying to reboot with Josh Trank. The two sides are expected to work out something, and you can bet that whoever Marvel selects from the plethora of choices they have will be met with great scrutiny by the fanboy community, who will be wondering how the company might introduce them into the movie world they have created.

As for "Daredevil," Fox is eager to do a "Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller" take on the superhero. And considering they're using Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s "Born Again" as the foundation for the new film, that's hardly a surprise. Voted the 11th Greatest Marvel Of All Time back in 2001, the story is gritty as hell. It turns out that Karen Page leaves the law offices of Nelson & Murdock to make it big as an actress, but instead to succumbs to heroin addiction and starring in porno movies. Desperate for a hit, she sells off Matt Murdock's alter ego and it's not long before Kingpin uses the info to drive Murdock to destitution and insanity. And where it goes from there, well, we won't spoil it. A potentially R-rated "Daredevil" with Carnahan at the helm? Yeah, we'd be down.

Whether it's a fair trade or not, Marvel kind of has Fox right where they want them at the moment. But then again, they'll have to play a bit of ball to get any crucial characters they need. But how do you feel about Carahan directing "Dardevil"? Let us know below.
